More than the standard pet chores, my primary job is to monitor the health and well-being of the animals in my care. This is one reason why I do not charge additional fees for administering medications or supplements. In addition to noting food and water consumption, the litter box provides a lot of information about feline health. I do not just scoop and go, but inspect the box for the frequency, quantity, and quality of the waste products therein. I’m looking for stool hardness/softness, consistency, color, and size. Are there abnormalities such as blood, foreign matter, or unexpected smells? Does the quantity of waste match the expectations for the number of cats in the household? Is everyone using the litter box, or are they going elsewhere, or are they not going at all?
Beyond the food, water, and litter box, I look for changes in:
* Mood and behavior
* Energy level and playfulness
* General posture, head and tail positions
* Eye clarity and discharge
* Fur, skin, and grooming
* Vocality – frequency, pitch, volume
* Mobility
* Breathing
I am experienced administering feline medications such as: pills, injections, oral syringes for liquids, various creams/ointments applied to the pinna or in the eye. With most cats, the process is quick and simple, but I am also familiar with the feisty kitties that need to be gently restrained in a towel for medicine time. I take my own cats to the excellent Cat Clinic of Fernandina and appreciate their approach to cat care. I continually learn a lot from Dr. Mersereau and her team to help me better care for the health of my cats and yours.
